Embedding Heat Pipes into a heat sink is an effective cooling
alternative to greatly enhance its performance with minimal design
changes.
By embedding Heat Pipes into an aluminium or copper Heat Sink or evaporator
the thermal spreading resistance is reduced and the thermal performance
henhanced. The Heat Pipes spread the heat more evenly across the base
plate for better distribution to the fin stack.
This technology provides an effective alternative to other methods.
For example, in the heat sink shown, heat pipes were embedded under
each of eight power amplifier modules. The heat pipes were 8mm diameter
flattened into grooves in the heat sink base with a thermal epoxy
at the interface. This approach reduced the thermal resistance of
the heat sink by 50%.
Embedded Heat Pipes may provide the needed improvement in existing
heat sink applications.
Heat Pipes can be embedded using several different methods
that form an integral part of Thermacores core competence. In essence
the resulting Heat Sink will have either totally embedded Heat Pipes
or Surface embedded Heat Pipes. The production method selected would
depend on various project specific requirements.
